General Themes: What is the difference between Electronic Commerce and Digital
Libraries?
what is unique about each area?
do we want to include definitions of each in the beginning?
transcetional (EC) v. archival (DL)?
common needs for access, search, physical data- management
Gov't support (certain DL's) vs. private/industry support (EC)
stored knowledge host will gain economic value
assets
access and exchange of info v. products of economic value (with feedback)
Should we even be thinking about and addressing the commonalities and
differences?
Common
Differences
share, create
payment?
control, protect
decision support
value
response time
privacy
quality of service
copyright intellectual property?
.
there were suggestions in the workshop to drop this whole idea of
listing the differences.
we came up with the idea that electronic commerce and digital libraries
are two partially overlapping spheres. we drew a diagram and labeled the
cross-section information transformation and trading information/business
transaction
digital libraries is a special case of electronic commerce, both also
common with tele-medical and tele-learning
