Abstract: This position paper describes a vision of the Electronic Marketplace that assumes readily available network connectivity, access mechanisms and a multitude of easily accessible online information databases. Its focus is not on the technical aspects of the architectural framework for such a marketplace, but on a functional analysis of the needs of various electronic commerce participants. In particular, the paper distinguishes between consumer and business-to-business buying and seeks to identify what characterizes these two types of procurement.Categories and Subject Descriptors: H.4.3 : Information Systems, Information Systems Applications, Communications Applications.
